Ports North

Location

Thursday Island, Torres Strait, Queensland

Works Completed

Concrete Repair, Pile Encasement

MCM employed locally-sourced workers with the assistance of GBK, a company specialising in employment services for Torres Strait Islanders. MCM would like to thank GBK for their support on this project.

Thursday Island has gained a strategic focus and is home to numerous government agencies treating day to day customs, quarantine, immigration and defence portfolios. Maintaining its wharves in good condition is a priority for Ports North.

Client brief

MCM was contracted by Ports North to conduct concrete repairs on the engineer wharf soffits, as well as the abutment of the main wharf to extend service life. Another part of the works was the encasement of existing octagonal piles of the approach jetty of the engineers wharf, as well as the nearby dolphin. The project presented logistical challenges due to location and the difference in infrastructure and available suppliers on Thursday Island. All plant, equipment and materials were freighted to the location using barges or available shipping lane vessels, depending on availability. The project acknowledged the strict environmental restrictions in place for fauna and flora, and water quality.
